The common thought about thermal management in electronic devices is on dissipating heat. There are situations where it is needed to add heat in equipments, and not only in the classic applications such as coffee machines or ovens.
Control boxes that work in an outdoors environment may suffer from condensation. By providing heating inside the box, this condensation is avoided. A suitable solution is heating with a PTC element or foil heater. Depending on the available supply voltage, power and dimensions, the heater is custom-designed, possibly with a temperature sensor, a thermal fuse or the appropriate connector.
When using a portable device it’s possible that the cold environment hinders the proper functioning. This may be caused by one component inside the device. For example an IC on the PCB or the LCD screen no longer works as expected. In this case it is not needed to heat up the whole device, but only the component that is most sensitive to the cold.
An interesting example is a high-end camera. These devices have cooling systems near the optical sensors for noise reduction and warmth is added to suppress condensation on the lens.
